The morbidity, primary disability of working people and children, causes of disability, mortality, fertility and other indices of the inhabitants of the Ivankiv district, Kyiv region, affected by the Chornobyl accident were studied. A significant increase in the general morbidity was found mainly due to diseases of the circulatory system, which along with cancer are the leading cause of disability of able-bodied population in the post-accidental period. Congenital malformations averaged 30% of children’s disability. Mortality of people of working age has increased 10 times compared to pre-accident period. The main causes of death for people of working age were mainly cardiovascular disease and cancer, while in the pre-accident period leading causes of death for people of working age were injuries and other accident cases. A very deep demographic crisis connected to bad health of Ivankiv district dwellers was found, which actually leads to the extinction of the district at a rate three times greater than the average in the Kyiv region. These data indicate a significant negative impact on the health of people living in contaminated areas, the consequences of the Chornobyl accident and the subsequent inadequate response to the changed living conditions, nutrition and the need for medical care of people in the area.

Key words: Chornobyl NPP accident, residents of contaminated areas, fertility, mortality, disability.
