The article presents a review on cellular aging and role of telomeres in mechanisms of diseases associated with aging. Using the relative telomere length as a biomarker in assessing radiation effects may be central to the concept of radiation protection for human exposure to ionizing radiation due to medical, professionally exposure, as well as an important mechanism in vascular aging and the pathogenesis of cerebrovascular disease.

Key words: ionizing radiation, relative length of telomeres, cerebrovascular pathology, Chornobyl.
